Thermal Spraying of Zinc Coatings for Corrosion Protection on Offshore Platforms

An offshore oil and gas platform in the Bohai Sea uses a double-layer protection scheme of thermal sprayed zinc layer (thickness 150μm) + epoxy zinc rich primer (DFT 80μm), which has been monitored for 5 years to show a corrosion depth of ≤0.03mm/year. The technology complies with NACE SP0198 standard, and the construction cost is 40% higher than that of single-layer coating, but the maintenance cycle is extended from 3 years to 8 years.
